It is very easy to feel the proximity with God, at Purnagiri. Situated at the awe-inspiring height of 3000 m above sea level. 22 kms from Tanakpur. 171 krns from Pithoragarh and 95 kms from Champawat. It's on the right bank of the river Kali, and is one of the 108 Siddha Peeths. A number of fairs take place here during Navratras. when devotees in a large number come from surrounding areas to have a darshan and worship the goddess Purnagiri creating an atmosphere of spirituality. The fair starts from Vishuwat Sankranti and continues for about forty days.

The temple is visited by thousands of devotees, particularly during the occasion of Chaitra Navratri, between March and April. It is from here that the river Kali descends into the plains. For visiting this shrine one can go up to Thuligarh by vehicle. From this point onwards one has to trek the rest of the way. After the ascent of Bans ki Charhai comes Hanuman Chatti. The southwestern part of 'Punya Parvat' can be seen from this place. Another ascent ends at the TRC of Tanki. The region of temporary shops and residential huts start from this place up to Tunyas. From the highest point of Purnagiri hill one gets the beautiful view of the river Kali, its islands, the township of Tanakpur and a few Nepali villages. After worshiping Mata Purnagiri, people also pay their tributes to her loyal devotee Bada Siddh Nath at Brahmadev and Mahendra Nagar in Nepal.

How to Reach

  • Air: Nearest Airport is at Pant Nagar, 121 kms (Via Khatima Nanakmatta) away.
  • Rail: Nearest Rail Head is at Tanakpur. 22 Kms away.
  • Road: Motorable road up to Tunyas, 19 kms from Tanakpur. From here a 3 kms trek leads to Purnagiri.

Beyond Poornagiri

Tanakpur: About 22 kms from Purnagiri. Tanakpur is a calm and small town located on riverside of Sharda River. It is located at the foothills and is the last plain area on the road to Kurnaon zone of Uttarakhand.lt acts as a junction for the Kumaon Zone's mountainous region. It is also the first point in the Kailash-Mansarovar Pilgrimage.

Champawat: Champawat offers the tourists virtually everything they expect from nature. ranging from pleasant climate to varied wildlife and good places to trek. Champawat was the capital of the Kumaon rulers for a very long time. The historical ruins of the fort of the Chand rulers can be seen here in Champawat. The Baleshwar and Rataneshwar temples, which display the exquisite works of carvings, are also situated in this town.

Joshimath: 14 km from Auli, Joshimath Town has many temples and memorials. It's gateway to Badrinath and the Valley of Flowers/Hemkund Sahib.

Pithoragarh: This easternmost hill district of the Uttarakhand is often referred as 'Miniature Kashmir. The district of Pithoragarh came into being in 1960 when it was carved out of the district of Almora. It borders with Tibet on the north and Nepal on the east.
